Most Popular WordPress Plugins

About this ranking

The WordPress.org plugin directory hosts more than 50,000 free plugins, but its “Popular” listing is a single static snapshot — it never tells you which plugins are gaining or losing ground. WP.MD records the directory’s popularity ranking every day and stores each plugin’s position over time, so you see movement across 1, 7, and 30 days instead of one frozen list. The table above reflects the ranking for 2026-10-30, compared against the previous day.

What the numbers mean

A plugin’s position is based on its standing in the WordPress.org “Popular” listing, which is driven largely by active installs and recent download velocity. Active installs (shown in buckets like 10M+ or 500K+) count sites currently running the plugin — and the directory caps the public figure at 10M+, a bucket only a handful of plugins occupy. As of 2026-10-30 that top tier is held by Elementor, Yoast SEO, and Contact Form 7.

Downloads behave differently for plugins than for themes. Every new release pushes an update to the plugin’s entire install base, so daily downloads spike with each version shipped — a plugin can post millions of downloads in a week without gaining a single new user. And as with default themes, bundling matters: Akismet ships with WordPress core, so part of its install base reflects preinstallation rather than deliberate choice.

Reading the movement columns

The 1D, 7D, and 30D columns show how far a plugin has climbed or dropped over each window. Large short-term jumps — the biggest risers — usually follow a directory feature, a major release, security headlines, or a change in WordPress core itself: Classic Editor’s years-long run near the top began as a direct reaction to the block editor’s launch. Sharp falls more often mean a competitor surged than a plugin actually losing installs. Entries in New in range are plugins that broke into the tracked ranking for the first time that week.

Directory popularity vs. real-world importance

Directory rank and real-world importance aren’t the same thing. The “Popular” sort rewards download velocity, which favors plugins that update often and plugins bundled with hosting stacks. Meanwhile a plugin like WooCommerce anchors a huge share of all online stores, and entire ecosystems — page-builder add-ons, form extensions, payment gateways — ride on the adoption of the platforms they extend. For the wider market picture — how many WordPress plugins exist, how fast the directory grows, and which categories lead — see our regularly updated WordPress plugin statistics. Comparing those figures with the tracker above is the quickest way to spot a plugin that’s quietly dominant despite a modest directory position.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular WordPress plugin right now?

As of 2026-10-30, Elementor leads the WordPress.org popularity ranking, followed by Yoast SEO and Contact Form 7. All three sit in the directory’s top 10M+ install bucket, so their order reflects WordPress.org’s popularity score rather than raw install counts.

What’s the difference between active installs and downloads?

Active installs count the sites currently running a plugin, shown in ranges like 10M+ or 500K+. Downloads count every fresh install and every update — so for a widely installed plugin, a new release alone can generate millions of downloads in days. That’s why a plugin can top the download charts while its active-install base stays flat, and why both columns are worth watching.

How is WordPress plugin popularity measured?

Directory popularity comes from the WordPress.org “Popular” listing, driven mainly by active installs and download velocity. It rewards momentum: plugins that update frequently or ship with WordPress itself rank higher than raw usage alone would suggest. WP.MD tracks the ranking daily so you can separate lasting position from short-lived spikes.

How often is this data updated?

The ranking refreshes daily. Each day’s movement is measured against the previous day, with 7-day and 30-day columns showing longer trends. Every plugin also gets its own page with full position and install history — click any name in the table to see its chart.
