What is WP.MD?

WP.MD is a daily tracker for the WordPress.org ecosystem. Every day we capture the official directories’ popularity rankings for themes and plugins and record each one’s position, active installs, and downloads — building the time series the directories themselves never show. Instead of a static snapshot, you see who’s rising, who’s falling, and how fast, across 1, 7, and 30 days. The lists above show the current top 20 themes and top 20 plugins by active installs, as of 2026-08-15.

Two catalogs, one ecosystem

Themes and plugins play by different rules, and the numbers reflect it. The theme directory caps public install counts at 1M+ — a bucket currently shared by Twenty Twenty-Five, Hello Elementor, and Astra. The plugin side runs an order of magnitude bigger, topping out at 10M+ active installs, where Elementor, Yoast SEO, and Contact Form 7 lead the field.
